Badminton became an Olympic medal sport for the first time at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Now, it will be part of the Olympics for the 10th time in a row. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that badminton is one of the 31 sports included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

There will still be five badminton events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. A total of 172 players will compete — 86 men and 86 women.

Badminton became an Olympic medal sport at the 1992 Games in Barcelona and has been included in every Olympics since then. In 1992, there were only four badminton events, but from the next Olympics, all five events have been included.

On Wednesday, April 9, the IOC Executive Board approved the list of sports and number of athletes for the LA 2028 Olympics. There will be 351 medal events, which is 22 more than at the Paris 2024 Games.

For the first time ever, all team sports at the Olympics will have the same number of women’s and men’s teams. Gender equality was very important when deciding how many athletes and events to include. Of the 351 total events, 161 are for women, 165 for men, and 25 are mixed-gender events.

The IOC Executive Board agreed with the Olympic Programme Commission’s suggestion and followed the rules set in 2023. These rules said the Games should be fair in gender, popular around the world, simple to run, and focused on the athletes.
