Carlo Ancelotti has started a fresh chapter with Brazil, focusing on rebuilding the team with a mix of young talent and experienced players. His squad looks strong, but questions remain—especially in defense—as Brazil prepares for the 2026 World Cup.

Busy Arrival in Brazil and Quick Decisions

Carlo Ancelotti didn’t get much rest after landing in Rio de Janeiro from Madrid. Just hours after his flight landed, he was already in meetings with Brazil’s football officials. The Italian coach had a tough task — to choose a final team of 26 players from a long list of 50. His choices were announced at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Rio.

Neymar Left Out, Casemiro Returns

Two big names made headlines Neymar and Casemiro. Ancelotti spoke to Neymar before the squad was announced and told him he’s not fit enough to join yet. Neymar is still recovering from injury.

Casemiro, however, is back. Though Ancelotti didn’t speak with him directly, the decision was expected. Casemiro’s experience and recent strong performances made his return almost certain.

Young Talent and Safe Choices

Young Talent and Safe Choices

This is Ancelotti’s first Brazil squad, and he’s gone with a mix of young stars and familiar faces. Players like Estevao Willian (just 18), Richarlison, and Antoni have made the list. These players were also part of the 2022 World Cup squad.

Brazil’s performance has been shaky since the last World Cup. So Ancelotti is focusing on building a strong base before going all-in. His first goal is to stabilize the team — and then push forward with the dream of winning the 2026 World Cup.

Big Problems in Defense and Fullbacks

Ancelotti’s squad highlights Brazil’s weakness in defense. Let’s look at the fullbacks. On the right: Vanderson (Monaco) and Wesley (Flamengo). On the left: Alex Sandro (Flamengo) and Carlos Augusto (Inter Milan). These names don’t shine like past Brazilian stars such as Roberto Carlos or Cafu.

In the center, Marquinhos leads the line. He’s joined by Danilo (who can also play fullback), Leo Ortiz, and Beraldo. While some have experience, their recent form hasn’t impressed.

Ancelotti’s Defensive Fix: Casemiro

Ancelotti’s Defensive Fix: Casemiro

To strengthen the defense, Ancelotti brought back Casemiro — a trusted player from his Real Madrid days. Casemiro brings leadership and strength. Despite limited starts under Manchester United’s new manager, he proved his worth with goals and strong play in the Europa League. He’s played 42 matches this season, showing he’s still reliable.

Midfield Needs Creativity

The midfield isn’t perfect either. Casemiro and Bruno Guimaraes bring experience, but the other four midfielders — Andres Pereira, Andre Santos, Ederson, and Gerson — have only 25 caps between them. And there’s no true playmaker. Brazil has lacked a creative midfielder for years.

Attacking Choices and Tough Decisions

In attack, Brazil has good options, but a small problem too. Vinicius Jr. (Real Madrid) and Raphinha (Barcelona) both prefer the left wing. Ancelotti has to decide who goes where. Raphinha can play on the right if needed. Rodrygo is injured, so Antoni (on loan at Real Betis) is likely to take his place. He’s been in top form this season with 9 goals and 5 assists in 25 games.

Richarlison is also in the mix. With all these names, Ancelotti has choices but also tough calls to make.
