Lionel Messi’s much-anticipated return to Barcelona didn’t materialize. Barça’s boss explained the reasons, citing financial constraints and Messi’s personal decision to join Inter Miami. The club respected his choice, acknowledging the emotional connection fans still hold.

A Reunion That Never Happened

Two years ago, fans around the world got excited at the idea of Lionel returning to FC Barcelona. After his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) ended in the summer of 2023, there was serious talk about Messi coming back to the club where he became a legend.

Rumors spread quickly, with many believing that Messi’s heart still belonged to Barça. Negotiations were even said to be underway. But in the end, Lionel didn’t return. Instead, he made the surprising decision to join Inter Miami in the United States.

Deco Explains Messi’s Decision

Barça’s sporting director, Deco, recently spoke to Globo Esporte and shared why the move didn’t happen. “People were talking about Arabia, Miami… Lionel story is so great, he is the greatest player in Barça’s history, that there may not be any repeats. Sometimes personal problems also play a role,” Deco said.

According to Deco, Lionel priority after leaving PSG was to find peace and happiness, not to deal with the intense pressure of returning to Barcelona. “That might not have been possible at Barça because the pressure would have been too great,” Deco explained.

A Happy Ending for Both Sides

Lionel ended up signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with Inter Miami. With about six months left on that contract, it seems the decision worked out well for everyone. Deco believes things turned out fine: “I think it was good for everyone. Barça continued on its path and tried to rebuild. And Messi continued on his path, scored goals, and was happy.”

What’s Next for Messi?

Will Lionel return to Barcelona in the future? The Spanish media might keep the idea alive, but it seems unlikely. At 37, Messi is reportedly planning to return to his first club, Newell’s Old Boys, in Argentina. This hasn’t been officially confirmed, but the idea has gained attention.

For now, Messi’s return to Barça remains just a dream for fans. But both Lionel and the club appear to have moved on in a positive direction.
