British number two Jacob Fearnley got his first ATP Tour main draw win on clay by beating Roberto Carballes Baena at the Barcelona Open.

The Scottish player entered the main draw as a lucky loser and defeated the Spanish player 6-1, 7-5 to reach the second round.

Next, he will play either Australia’s fifth seed Alex de Minaur or Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Just a year ago, Fearnley was ranked outside the top 600. But after winning four ATP Challenger titles in 2024, he’s now ranked 74th and will qualify directly for the French Open, which runs from 25 May to 8 June.

In other news, Britain’s Billy Harris lost a close match to Belgium’s David Goffin at the Munich Open. Harris, who also entered as a lucky loser, was defeated 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 32 minutes.
