Harry Brook takes charge as Brook’s appointment signals a fresh start for England’s struggling white-ball setup. Despite being part of the team’s leadership group as vice-captain in 2024, this full-time promotion has come slightly earlier than expected.
Rob Key, ECB’s Director of Cricket, praised Brook’s cricketing intelligence and leadership qualities. He stated that Brook had long been part of England’s succession plans. The decision was made over recalling Ben Stokes, who was also considered for the role.
Brook has already captained England in Buttler’s absence and has strong white-ball credentials. He has scored 816 runs in 26 ODIs and 44 T20I appearances, with a reputation for aggressive yet composed batting.
England’s white-ball form has dipped drastically, with 10 losses in their last 11 games. The ECB hopes Brook, alongside coach Brendon McCullum, can guide the team back to its winning ways. His first series as captain will be at home against the West Indies in May.
